7/10 blog post The 00's and 01's left early this morning for Copenhagen. They have had a full day of travel with layovers in Boston and Iceland. The team will arrive in Copenhagen early tomorrow morning and spend the day touring the city. 98's: Today everyone in the group boarded a bus and headed out for a day of sightseeing - the Golden Circle tour. The first stop was in Thingvellir National Park and the mid Atlantic ridge. Iceland represents the largest portion of the mid-Atlantic ridge exposed above sea level. It is one of the few places where you can stand on the ridge on dry land. Our next stop was the Geysir geothermal fields where we watched the Strokkur geyser erupt several times. This particular geyser shoots water 98 ft into the air every 4-8 minutes. We then made our way to the Gulfoss waterfall - Iceland's most famous waterfall. The falls originate in the glacial lake Langjokull. Gulfoss means "golden falls" because the sediment in the water turns the falls golden in the sunlight. The waterfall is 105' and unusual because it cascades down in 2 steps. Along the way, we saw the Hekla volcano (one of Iceland's most active volcanoes), lava fields, glaciers, and lots of Icelandic horses and sheep. Our final stop was a small town just outside of Reykjavik where the girls were able to experience a simulated 6.6 earthquake.
